Franz:
You Georg, yesterday at the baker – three poppy seed rolls and two Kaiser rolls.
And what did the cashier charge?
Three Euros and One Cent!
I said: “That can’t be – a poppy seed roll costs 65 cents, I remembered that!”
Georg:
Haha, yes of course… three rolls, two Kaisers… somehow you never get exactly 3.01. Mysterious!
Franz:
Exactly! I stood there, looked at the register, and thought: Who invented this weird number?
Georg:
Simple: rounding magic at the bakery. Each item is calculated separately, VAT added, the cash register rounds… and in the end, you get a little “surprise cent” served.
Franz:
So basically a free math experiment at breakfast?
Georg:
Exactly! And here’s the kicker: if you calculate everything properly…
Franz:
Go on, now tell me!
Georg:
… then a Kaiser roll costs exactly 53 cents!
You see, math strikes again – and you not only ate rolls, but also got the rounding cent of the day.
Franz:
Haha, cheers to a clever breakfast and 53-cent rolls!
Next time I’ll go specifically to see which cent I can snag again!
